Every night I cruise...

... around the internet, looking at pictures and videos of used and new RVs.  Keeping the dream alive, LOL.  Anyway, in many talks with my DH it turns out he wants to travel at least part of the year, so we are talking about a nicely appointed and good sized fiver and a good truck.  For a few days I contemplated restoring my vintage Terry travel trailer.  For 34 years old, it is still in pretty good shape; although there is a little rust on the bumpers, it needs re-plumbing and rewiring, and the shower surround is shot.  I realized, finally, that I don't have the skills or the strength to do it.  And it really is too small for two full-timers and dogs.  I might be able to sell it on eBay as vintage (it is certainly old enough).  I won't get squat for it here!

We both like the idea of parking for at least a month at a time, maybe up to six months, so I don't think a Class A will work for us.  I've been reading all of the women-on-the-road blogs I can find, but I'll have to branch out to couples with dogs on the road.  I may have to rename this blog Two Wolves and a Pair of Sausages on the Road, if we both go and take the dachshunds.  I am concerned about taking more than two dogs as many RV parks don't permit more than two.  Those are still details I have plenty of time to work out.

I don't think I want to stay on the road forever (my forever may be somewhat limited) but I would like to spend a couple or three years going around the country before I park the fiver permanently.  I have a fantasy of finding a paradise on earth to live (right!) but I'll probably end up close to one or both of my kids.  I hope they pick someplace nice!

Humming Ramblin' Rose this evening.

  1. I'm in the same spot as you - we are probably looking at the same websites. I also have a hubby who will go "sometimes" and that makes the decision tougher. It we were 2 and full-timing for a while, I would definitely get a 5-er. Can't wait to see what you decide. Exciting, ain't it?

  2. Hi Kimbopolo, thanks for following! My DH and I have been having a pretty difficult time economically this past year, so I think he is coming around to full-timing instead of part-timing. The 5er and truck look like the way we're going. My biggest difficulty is not letting go of the house, but of rehoming some of our pets. I know I can't take them all. We probably have another year here, so perhaps this question will sort itself out.

  3. Theresa,

My friends, Chuck and Geri, (You may have seen their names in the Comments on my blog) have traveled in their fiver for quite some time with three dogs whom they call The Hound Herd. They could tell you about the pros and cons of three dogs on the road. I haven't heard them say anything about parks not letting them in. http://phunnyfarm.blogspot.com If that link doesn't work, you can click on Geri's name in my Comments section. Good luck figuring out what's best for you!

    1. Hi Sue, thanks for the comments! I'll check out Chuck and Geri for sure... I love reading all these blogs. I hardly do anything else these days. I get so many ideas about places to go, rigs I like, and hints for making life on the road easier and more convenient. I especially like the blogs with dogs.

I did some looking online for commercial campgrounds and some of them did have a two dog limit. The most important thing, though, is both of us are pushing 70 hard and the energy levels just aren't there. Trying to find that balance between what we can do and what the doggies need. I have a year to work it out, and I'm sure it will happen just as it should.

  4. One more thing . . . Feel free to ask Geri or me questions on my blog. (You don't have to stay on topic -- I never do!) I gave my 3rd dog to a friend before fulltiming. I knew I couldn't handle her plus Bridget and Spike, being all by myself. Two people might do fine with three dogs. .. depends on the dogs and the people.

  5. Hi, Theresa. I read a lot of blogs and searched and searched for an RV before mine showed up. I, too, would like a little piece of paradise to park my RV occasionally, my own land, but feel I will travel forever. Good Luck on your search and I'm sure you would be able to sell your trailer on eBay.
